They are coworkers...and best friends. Sometimes the only "communicating beings" they see for days on end.
The first eats, always knowing the last bites are for the one who worked so hard for his shepherd...honor for the first and privilege for the second. The dog will do the work for 3 men, without telling him what/how to do it.
Together, ALWAYS their flocks they tend, happier together than the proud are great.
The Shepherd sometimes has no other friend—No Lordly home, no bed sheltered in warmth
They lie together on a hillside, clean and low, They hear, in their stillness, the wild winds blow,
And though they never another Spring may see, The Shepherd, and his Dog, are loved, they are family.
